REACH Lab Members

Krysta Pelowich is a second-year PhD student in Community Health Sciences at UCLA. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Health with a minor in Anthropology at University of Colorado at Denver. After that, she studied at Brown University where she earned her master’s in Public Health with a concentration in Global Health. Her prior work has focused on socio-economic drivers of intimate partner violence in a global context with the goal of creating implementation strategies that reduce the use of violence. She has also worked on projects that utilize couples-based interventions to reduce HIV transmission between mother to child. Krysta is excited to join Dr. Garfin and the REACH lab team to further explore the connection between trauma and the impact it has on individuals, as well as communities.

Xumeng Yan is a first-year PhD student in Community Health Sciences at UCLA. Before that, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology at Zhejiang University in China and her master’s degree at the University of Chicago. Her previous research has focused on how stigmatization and other socioeconomic factors impact mental health disparities. She has also worked closely with marginalized populations to develop community-based crowdsourcing interventions. With a passion for the betterment of mental health care for everyone everywhere, Xumeng is excited to join the REACH lab team. She hopes the opportunity will allow her to explore the impact of collective stress and trauma on population mental health across time, specifically focusing on creating interventions to cultivate resilience.

Andrew Chuang is currently a second year M.S. student in the biostatistics department at UCLA. He received his B.A in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Chicago. Prior to starting grad school at UCLA, he worked as a data scientist in tech and litigation consulting. Outside of research, Andrew enjoys rock climbing and reading.

Cordelia Lee received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. As an undergraduate, she was involved in research focusing on social support and health psychology, as well as being involved in the UCLA Grand Depression Challenge. Over the past year, she has been working on obtaining a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics. Upon completion of her MPH Program, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in the future in the hopes of exploring the intersections of AI and data science. Outside of school, Cordelia enjoys music and muay thai. She is very excited and grateful to be a part of the REACH lab team!

Frances Kiles received her B.S. in Biology from Tufts University and is a first-year Master of Public Health/Master of Social Welfare concurrent degree student at UCLA. After obtaining her MPH/MSW degree, Franny plans to pursue a career in mental health counseling or medical social work in order to support the bio-psychosocial needs of individuals from underserved communities with chronic diseases, mental illness, and/or disabilities. She is excited to join the REACH Lab team and support research at the intersection of the public health and social welfare fields. In her free time, Franny enjoys hiking, writing, and playing music.

Lauren Anderson is an incoming graduate student at UCLA. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in Business Administration. Lauren is excited to join the REACH Lab and UCLA’s MPH program. Over the past few years, Lauren has worked as a medical assistant and in cardiovascular research. She also spent time volunteering for the Canadian Courage Project - a non-profit organization that provides services and support for youth experiencing homelessness. Her research interests include mental health, childhood development, and interventions for underrepresented, marginalized communities. Lauren is excited to learn more while working for Dr. Garfin’s REACH lab, and she hopes to establish a career in community mental health programming.

 

Jay Lorenzini earned his B.S. in Communication from Boston University and his M.S. in Mass Communications and Advertising from Virginia Commonwealth University. After 15 years as an advertising art director, he changed paths to pursue a career in psychology. Jay’s research interests include trauma, resilience, mindfulness, and mindfulness-based interventions.
